What is BestSolv® 7100 Engineered Fluid?
BestSolv® 7100 Engineered Fluid is a specialized hydrofluoroether (HFE) designed for various industries and uses. It excels in heat management for semiconductor manufacturing, offers efficient cooling for data centers via immersion, and serves as a reliable solvent for cleaning and rinsing purposes.
In technical literature, this chemistry may also be described as 3M™ HFE 7100 or 7100 fluid, both of which refer back to the baseline performance characteristics established by 3M™ Novec™ 7100.

Also known as HFE 7100, BestSolv® 7100 is a clear, colorless and low-odor fluid. Its chemical composition is methoxy-nonafluorobutane, also known as methyl nonafluoroisobutyl ether C4F9OCH3 (CAS 163702-08-7).
As an HFE 7100 replacement, BestSolv® 7100 is designed for applications that require consistent thermal performance and reliable material compatibility. Manufacturers looking for an HFE 7100 option often use it in precision cleaning, vapor degreasing, and heat transfer processes.
Aside from being efficient in transferring heat and solvent cleaning, BestSolv® 7100 is characterized by its low toxicity, non-flammable nature, zero ozone depletion, and minimal global warming potential. Its performance profile makes it a strong HFE 7100 choice for electronics, semiconductor, and industrial cleaning environments. For companies seeking a dependable HFE 7100 fluid, BestSolv® 7100 offers a practical solution.
BestSolv® 7100 is a high-purity neat HFE in itself and also acts as the base chemical for various other BestSolv® HFE products that share the “71” prefix, like BestSolv® 71IPA (containing isopropyl alcohol) and BestSolv® 71DE (containing t-DCE, also known as trans-1,2-dichloroethylene).
BestSolv® 7100 is frequently evaluated when specifications cite 3M™ 7100, 3M™ 7100 replacement, or 3M™ HFE 7100 replacement, all of which originate from legacy use of 3M™ Novec™ 7100 in cleaning, cooling, and heat transfer applications.

BestSolv® 7100 Applications
As a cleaning solvent, BestSolv® 7100 is suited for light-duty cleaning, rinsing or vapor degreasing and is compatible with a wide variety of materials, including metal, glass and many plastics.
For facilities evaluating alternatives to Promosolv DR3 or other Novec™ 7100 replacement fluids, BestSolv® 7100 can be considered as an alternative for light-duty cleaning, rinsing, vapor degreasing, and heat-transfer applications. As with any solvent change, customers should confirm compatibility and performance under their specific process conditions.
As a heat transfer agent, BestSolv® 7100 is non-conductive and has high dielectric strength, making it ideal for use in electrical and electronic applications. For cooling purposes, BestSolv® 7100 is an excellent HFE coolant for use with chiller systems. Data center components can be submerged in BestSolv® 7100 while still running, without damage to delicate electronics.

Other applications of the surprisingly versatile BestSolv® 7100 include:
- Dielectric testing
- Gross Leak Testing for Hermetic Electronics
- Calibration fluid
- Forensic fingerprint analysis
- Oxygen system cleaning
- Diffusion cleaning of textiles and artifacts
- Document preservation and cleaning
- Organic rankine cycle
- Lubricant carrier for fluorochemicals and silicones
- Preservation of biological specimens
BestSolv® 7100 for Diffusion Cleaning and Preservation
BestSolv® 7100 hydrofluoroether (HFE) solvents is used for diffusion cleaning of textiles and artifacts, providing conservators with a safe, reliable solution for removing surface contaminants from delicate or historically significant materials. Their low surface tension and non-reactive chemistry allow controlled cleaning of fragile fibers, pigments, and surfaces without altering appearance or structure.
These same properties make BestSolv® fluids ideal for document preservation and cleaning, effectively lifting oils, dust, and residues from paper, parchment, and inked materials while remaining non-reactive and residue-free. Used by museums, archives, and research institutions, BestSolv® solvents offer a proven, non-flammable alternative to discontinued 3M™ Novec™ 7100 and 7200 fluids for conservation and restoration workflows.

BestSolv® 7100 vs 3M™ Novec™ 7100 Isomeric Comparison
BestSolv® 7100 and 3M™ Novec™ 7100 chemicals have identical primary isomers with near-identical properties and characteristics as shown above. Isomers are molecules with the same elemental molecular formula C5H3F9O that vary in connectivity (arrangements of atoms in space) as a result of differing manufacturing processes.
3M™ Novec™ 7100 was made through electrochemical fluorination (ECF), also known as the Simons process, producing two isomers:
- Methyl nonafluoroisobutyl ether – (CF3)2CFCF2OCH3 (CAS 163702-08-7)
- Methyl nonafluorobutyl ether – CF3CF2CF2CF2OCH3 (CAS 163702-07-6)
In this older manufacturing process, the isomers cannot be separated during synthesis. The isomers are nearly identical and do not change the properties or characteristics of the fluid.

This older process of electrochemical fluorination (ECF) creates long-chain PFAS compounds such as perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) as a byproduct. These long-chain compounds are targeted by global regulation as persistent organic pollutants.
In contrast, BestSolv® 7100 is made by an anionic catalytic polymerization process and contains a single iso-butyl isomer:
- Methyl nonafluoroisobutyl ether – (CF3)2CFCF2OCH3 (CAS 163702-08-7)
The single isomer in BestSolv® 7100 has essentially identical properties to the two combined Novec™ 7100 n- and iso-butyl isomers above. BestSolv™ 7100 has the added benefit of not creating long-chain PFAS compounds as a manufacturing byproduct.
In 2020, the 3M™ Novec™ 7100 formulation increased from 20%-80% to 55-90% the ratio of isomer methyl nonafluoroisobutyl ether (CAS 163702-08-7) to methyl nonafluorobutyl ether (CAS 163702-07-6). BestSolv® 7100 and 3M™ Novec™ 7100 chemicals exhibit near-identical properties and characteristics.
