How Passivation Works:
Passivation removes iron from the surface of stainless steel by a treatment of an acidic solution (typically nitric or citric acid) leaving chromium at the part surface. The chromium forms chromium oxide, the corrosion resistant component of stainless steel, when exposed to air.
The process is usually a multi-stage process including: washing, rinsing, passivation, and final rinse under heated solution environments.
