Tube cleaning presents a difficult challenge in part washing because cleaning solution must flow through the tube in order to properly clean.  Various cleaning methods exist for short tubes with large enough internal diameter (ID), but when the aspect ratio length:ID increases, it becomes necessary to force solution flow through the pipe itself or use a fluid with low enough surface tension to properly “wet” the part surfaces.

Inevitably bone screws and other orthopedic/surgical implants have burrs from machining processes which need to be removed. Mass finishing and centrifugal barrel finishing is often the most preferred method for deburring bone screws since the process is performed in mass quantity vs. individual part processing yet allows for proper deburring and high polish.

Quick Dump Rinse Tank DI Rinser for Ultrapure Water in Wet Processing Equipment
Quick Dump Rinse Tanks (QDR) are used to properly rinse semiconductor wafers, cassettes and other parts while conserving DI/ultrapure water. Semiconductor wafer and cassette cleaning, etching, and stripping applications must be completely removed including in blind recesses and pockets to ensure chemicals do not continue to process (etch, strip, etc). Continued chemical processing after removal from wet process tank can result in over etching, stripping, failed wafer patterns and other semiconductor failures.

The newer generation vapor degreasing solvents are more “environmentally and operator friendly” ; however, the newer HFE/HFC solvents are typically weaker solvents that do not remove heavier oils, grease, flux or wax.  Due to previous environmental regulations, public perception, or possible employee safety concerns, some companies have restricted any use of chlorinated solvents that are often added to the HFE/HFC solvents to aid in cleaning performance.


The “bi-solvent/co-solvent” process allows the use of specific “primary” solvents to target specific soils that are then rinsed off with a clean, non-flammable solvent that is constantly “re-distilled” in the vapor degreaser.

Case Study: Vapor Degreaser Using 3M Novec Solvent For Medical Device Instruments

A Minneapolis, MN based medical device manufacturer of surgical instruments parts has very small passage ways which are extrude honed with abrasive media, mineral oil and also Swiss machines tight tolerance profiles. The low surface tension of 3M Novec 72DA engineered fluid solvent used in a vapor degreaser allows for cleaning these sensitive parts of all the media and oils without any non-volatile residues.

Spring Cleaning: Passivation specification and process review

Many companies are trying to move toward more environmentally friendly chemistries including for stainless steel passivation processes.  Nitric acid has long time been used for passivation but employee exposure, handling and environmental disposal issues have always been a challenge.  With recent advancements in biocides for citric acid, citric acid use for passivation has grown significantly.
